Introduction
Bangun Indonesia Foundation (BIF) is a non government and nonprofit organization which was established on March 2001 in Jakarta, Indonesia. BIF concern on development issues including education, public health, community development, environment, research and development, information dissemination, and strategic and operational management including program and project planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. The Foundation partnership with government institutions, private sectors, and civil society organization develops various activities to address issues on illiteracy and education, poverty and quality of life, environment’s degradation, poor health status, decentralization, policy and strategy and ineffectiveness and inefficiency of social programs implementation. BIF implements its programs involving a team of professionals which consist of community educator, public health specialist, malariologist, sociologist, urban planner, financial, project management, and they are highly committed and qualified. The BIF was founded by four Indonesian professionals:

Mission
BIF is dedicated to assist raising the national literacy rate, increasing educational opportunities for all Indonesians, transferring appropriate science and applied technology from sources worldwide to targeted groups in Indonesia (Fig 1)

Vision
BIF’s vision is to help enhance the standard living and a quality life of urban poor, rural Indonesians, women, the nation’s youth and children by training educators, government officials, and members of the private sector.

Programs and Services
BIF professional offers various services including training and education, environmental health assistance, social development, management training, dissemination, research and development:
- Training Educators in Reading Pedagogy. The foundation utilizes the latest techniques in reading pedagogy, matching innovative methodologies with the interest and need of client educators.
- Environmental Health Assistance. BIF environmental scientist provides consulting and instruction in water pollution, solid waste management and technology transfer. Out professionals also help develop strategies for coping the present environmental issues.
- Social Development. Foundation scientist provides programs for social development within public and non governmental agencies. Modalities of the social development are based upon decentralization, partnership, community participation and sustainability. BIF also provides technical assistance to government and non government organizations in preparing and implementing the strategies of programs for empowerment and community development.
- Management Training. In order to enhance managerial effectiveness and efficiency, BIF provides management training to government functionaries, non profit representatives and community managers. Training methods include strategic and project planning, leadership, fundraising, conflict management and project evaluation.
- Dissemination of Information. The BIF publishes books, articles, guidelines and reports and in addition the foundation offers assistance to other institution in the publication of their documents. Such publications enhance communication and permit efficient transfer of technology.
- Research and Development. BIF provides a well trained and research capability for conducting survey research on social, public health, urban planning, and economic issues. The foundation also conducts participatory evaluation research to provide accurate and reliable information for program and project planning

Professional Activities
Education
- On March 2001, BIF introduced a concept “A 100 year national development through reading and learning society in Indonesia”. The concept describes the background, issues, mission, vision, goal, objectives, strategies, hypothesis, implementation, and source of funding.
- BIF in collaboration with The National Library Republic of Indonesia (Perpustakaan Nasional) conducted a workshop on “A 100 year national development through reading and learning society” in Jakarta on April 21, 2003. The objectives were to introduce and socialize the concept, develop commitment, and partnership among decision makers, and discuss the follow up. The Perpustakaan Nasional has followed up higher decision makers commitment and resulted in announce of the Reading Movement by President on November 4th, 2003.
- BIF on collaboration with Rotary International District 3400 Purwokerto, Central Java followed up the Jakarta workshop in the district of Purwokerto “The objectives were to introduce and socialize the concept, develop commitment, and partnership among decisions makers at the district level, and discuss the follow up in the district. The government, private sector, and civil society organization at the district developed a local commitment, partnership and development Reading and Learning Center in Jatisari village, Purwokerto.
- BIF in collaboration with Yayasan Kesejahteraan Pegawai Pertamina held a workshop to develop an action plan in Jakarta (December 19th, 2004). The purposes were to discuss the action plan of the Reading and Learning Center.
- BIF and Dharmawanita opened RLC (Rural Learning Center) in Jatisari, Purwokerto – Central Java (January 19th, 2005). The purposes of this center are to motivate local community to learn and read variety of science and technology application which they needs. In addition, the center became training and learning center in various knowledge and skills for improving basic education, health status, and income generation.
- BIF partnership with Dharmawanita conduct reading and learning competition in Jabotabek (Jakarta, Bogor, Tangerang, Bekasi) to improve awareness and habit of young generation in reading and learning (May-August 2004)
- BIF in collaboration with Hosni Associate (Singapore) to conduct educational tour to Singapore. The purpose of this program is to build reading and learning of Indonesia society by learning from individual’s experiences during the visiting to Singapore in learning the discovery science and technology.
- BIF partnership with National Library with the assistance of the Embassy of Republic of China (Mr.Xucai) carried out an educational tour to RRC (Beijing, Goangzu, Guanxi) and Singapore. The Purposes were to provide lessons learned in developing reading and learning society in RRC and Singapore (October 2004).
- 9. BIF provided training and practical experience in project implementation for the students of School of Public Health, University of Indonesia, 2008, 2009.

Public Health
- BIF was actively a member (2002-2008) of CCM, Global Fund for Aids Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM), which was responsible for reviewing project proposal, monitoring, evaluation and reporting its implementation funded by GFATM. As of 2009, BIF was not interested any more in the CCM due to lack of partnership between government, private sector, and CSOs. Moreover, BIF was treated unfair in the process of the PR selection.
- BIF provides technical assistance in developing Monitoring and Evaluation bidding program for GFATM of malaria project Round 1. BIF was not interested in the bidding the evaluation of malaria project.

- BIF partnership with Health Center Simpenan and District Health Office, Sukabumi, West Java, and PT Sumitomo Indonesia carried out malaria project for “Prevention and Control of Malaria in Two Endemic Villages Kertajaya and Loji (Sukabumi, West Java) January 2006 – January 2007, funded by Japanese Government through Embassy of Japan. The Project was followed up by partnership BIF, VNG International, Logo South Indonesia and ESP USAID in improving access to adequate water services.
- BIF partnership with District of Tangerang, District Health Office is replicating the Project for prevention and control of Avian Influenza through increasing awareness and practice on personal hygiene and environmental sanitation 2009-2010. The project is funded by the Government of Japan, through Embassy of Japan in Indonesia. The project is being carried out in 4 sub-districts including Cikupa, Pasar Kemis, and……….. The activities of the project include stakeholder meeting, community need assessment, develop strategic and operational plan, TOT, training cadres and volunteers, advocacy, socialization, M+E, and final workshop
- BIF partnership with CCF, and local government, Health Center Maumere, District Health Office, Sikka, East Nusa Tenggara, and PT Sumitomo Indonesia is carrying out “Project for Prevention and Control of Malaria in three Endemic Villages Waiterang, Nangatobong and Egon, March 2009 – January 2010, funded by Japanese Government through Embassy of Japan. The Project was a replication of a model of the Project for Malaria in Sukabumi.

Research and Development
- BIF provided technical assistant on need assessment in building reading and learning center through regional planning and community development approach for the national Library of Indonesia, in Bali (December 2003 –February 2004).
- BIF provided technical assistant in need assessment for building reading and learning center through regional planning and community development approach for District Library Department of Province Riau (government) and non government organization (LP3 Riau), in Riau (Pekan Baru and Sungai Apit District) on June 7th -9th, 2004.
- BIF partnership with National Library and Embassy of Republic of China carried out a comparative study on reading and learning for development in Beijing, Guanzu , Quanxi and Singapore (September 2004).
- BIF partnership with University of Indonesia Public Health Faculty - Local Government Sukabumi funded by VNG International, conducted Social Research of “Water Supply in poor villages Kertajaya, Sukabumi, West Java in December 2006 – February 2007.
- BIF funded by VNG International conducted of workshop “Water Supply in poor villages Kertajaya, Sukabumi, West Java” on March 13, 2007.
- BIF provide training in research methodology to the senior students at the School of Health, Nusantara,Palembang

Management and Training
- BIF provided training in operational planning (Logical Framework) for the manager of the Islamic Hospital in Jakarta on 2002.
- BIF provided training in operational planning (Log frame) for the manager of the Indonesian Islamic Hospital in Yogyakarta on 2002.
- BIF provided training in strategic planning to the Faculty Members of the University of Indonesia, Department of Sociology, Master Program in Management.
- BIF in collaboration with Yayasan Bina Mandiri provided training in Strategic Planning and Operational Planning for the Heads of Sub-district and Villages in West Java
- BIF in collaboration with Yayasan Bina Mandiri provided training in Operational Planning for the Heads of Sub district and Villages in Bekasi and Jatinangor.
- BIF assisted National Library in conducted International Workshop on Reading Habit Interest
- BIF conducted training on “strategic planning for Lecturer`s of Social and Political Science Faculty, University of Indonesia in Campus Depok on September 2006.
- BIF provided training in strategic planning and operational planning for senior students of the Nusantara School of Health in Palembang, 2007.

Program/Project Evaluation
- BIF carried out a final evaluation of the “Community Base First Aid Project (CBFA)” funded by Netherlands Red Cross in collaboration with Indonesian Red Cross, in Indramayu District, West Java on June – August 2006.
- BIF conducted a final evaluation of the “Logo South Program for Water Supply in Indonesia” in 2005-2008. The purposes were to identify the program performance in achieving its objectives and impact using the criteria of relevancy, effectiveness, efficiency, impact, and sustainability in 2007.
- BIF carried out the a Project Completion Report (PCR) of ICDC Project funded by Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Central Java, East Kalimantan, West Java, East Nusa Tenggara, South Sumatra, and Palu ( April – May 2006). The purposes of the evaluation were to determine whether the project implementation achieved its objectives, effective, efficient, impact, and sustainability
- BIF carried out a final project evaluation for CBFA Project implemented by PMI and NLRC funded by ANZO in South Jakarta, Pasuruan, East Java, Pasir East Kalimantan, Bone Bolango and Pohuwato Gorontalo, Pangkal Pinang and Bangka, Babel (June-July 2009). The purposes of the evaluation were to determine whether the project implementation achieved its objectives, effective, efficient, impact, and sustainability The criteria of evaluation mainly focused on the capacity building and water and sanitation construction with the criteria of relevance, effectiveness, efficiency, impact, and sustainability.
